Blaine Higgs Announces Renewed Legal Challenge Against Federal Carbon Tax<\/h2>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Fredericton, NB\u00a0\u2014 Today, Premier Blaine Higgs announced that the Progressive Conservative government of New Brunswick will be launching a renewed legal challenge against the federal government\u2019s carbon tax. This decision comes in response to recent amendments made by the Trudeau government, which have introduced several “carve outs” exempting certain regions from paying the tax, undermining the Supreme Court\u2019s initial ruling that mandated a truly national program.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u201cWhen the Supreme Court ruled that the federal carbon tax was constitutional, they made it clear that it needed to be applied uniformly across the country,\u201d stated Premier Higgs. \u201cHowever, the current federal government has created a patchwork system with exemptions that clearly violate the Court’s ruling. We cannot stand by while the fairness and integrity of our legal system are compromised.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
The Premier emphasized that the carbon tax is impacting all New Brunswickers by driving up the cost of living, and it also has hidden costs that many do not consider. The provincial government is forced to pay the federal carbon tax whenever it fuels up emergency vehicles such as ambulances and police cars or heats public buildings like hospitals. This, Premier Higgs argued, diverts much-needed funds away from essential public services.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u201cOur legal challenge is about more than just opposing a tax,\u201d said Premier Higgs. \u201cIt\u2019s about defending New Brunswickers from policies that make life more expensive and unfairly target our province. We need to protect our ability to provide critical services without additional financial burdens imposed by Ottawa.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Premier Higgs also addressed the importance of electing a provincial government that will not implement its own carbon tax, regardless of future changes at the federal level. He warned that even if Pierre Poilievre is elected as Prime Minister and eliminates the federal carbon tax, a potential Liberal-Green coalition in New Brunswick could still impose a provincial version of the tax.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
\u201cWe cannot rely solely on changes in Ottawa,\u201d Premier Higgs cautioned. \u201cA Liberal-Green coalition here in New Brunswick could introduce a provincial carbon tax, which would have devastating consequences for our economy and the cost of living. New Brunswickers deserve a government that will stand firm against any form of carbon tax, federal or provincial.\u201d<\/div>\n

The Premier concluded by calling on NB Liberal leader Susan Holt and NB Green leader David Coon to clarify their positions on the carbon tax, stating that New Brunswickers deserve transparency and accountability from all parties on this critical issue.<\/div>\n

Fredericton (Nouveau-Brunswick)\u00a0-, Le premier ministre Blaine Higgs a annonc\u00e9 aujourd\u2019hui que le gouvernement progressiste-conservateur du Nouveau-Brunswick intentera une nouvelle contestation judiciaire contre la taxe sur le carbone du gouvernement f\u00e9d\u00e9ral. Cette d\u00e9cision donne suite aux r\u00e9centes modifications apport\u00e9es par le gouvernement Trudeau, qui ont introduit plusieurs \u00ab exclusions \u00bb exemptant certaines r\u00e9gions du paiement de la taxe, sapant ainsi la d\u00e9cision initiale de la Cour supr\u00eame qui exigeait un programme v\u00e9ritablement national.<\/div>\n

\u00ab Lorsque la Cour supr\u00eame a jug\u00e9 que la taxe f\u00e9d\u00e9rale sur le carbone \u00e9tait constitutionnelle, elle a clairement indiqu\u00e9 qu’elle devait \u00eatre appliqu\u00e9e uniform\u00e9ment dans tout le pays \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le premier ministre Higgs. \u00ab Cependant, le gouvernement f\u00e9d\u00e9ral actuel a cr\u00e9\u00e9 un syst\u00e8me disparate avec des exemptions qui violent clairement la d\u00e9cision de la Cour. Le premier ministre a soulign\u00e9 que la taxe sur le carbone a un impact sur tous les N\u00e9o-Brunswickois.e.s en augmentant le co\u00fbt de la vie, et qu’elle a \u00e9galement des co\u00fbts cach\u00e9s que beaucoup ne prennent pas en compte. Le gouvernement provincial est contraint de payer la taxe f\u00e9d\u00e9rale sur le carbone chaque fois qu’il fait le plein des v\u00e9hicules d’urgence tels que les ambulances et les voitures de police ou qu’il chauffe des b\u00e2timents publics comme les h\u00f4pitaux. Selon le premier ministre Higgs, cela d\u00e9tourne des fonds indispensables des services publics essentiels.<\/div>\n

Le premier ministre Higgs a \u00e9galement soulign\u00e9 l’importance d’\u00e9lire un gouvernement provincial qui ne mettra pas en \u0153uvre sa propre taxe sur le carbone, quels que soient les changements futurs au niveau f\u00e9d\u00e9ral. Il a pr\u00e9venu que m\u00eame si Pierre Poilievre est \u00e9lu Premier ministre et qu’il \u00e9limine la taxe f\u00e9d\u00e9rale sur le carbone, une \u00e9ventuelle coalition lib\u00e9rale-verte au Nouveau-Brunswick pourrait toujours imposer une version provinciale de la taxe.<\/div>\n
