Better Financial Education<\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

September 26, 2024 – <\/b>Blaine Higgs, leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick committed today that a Progressive Conservative government would integrate financial literacy into the province\u2019s curriculum to ensure that all students enter adulthood with a better understanding of how money works.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
\u201cIt\u2019s critical that we go back to the basics to ensure that children and youth can leave school with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of financial literacy,\u201d declared Higgs. \u201cIt\u2019s unacceptable that a growing number of youth don\u2019t know how to open a bank account, build a household budget, save for the future, or understand how credit, inflation, and compound interest work.\u201d All around the world, there is a growing realization that our younger generations are lacking the financial knowledge they need to make informed decisions with their money. This knowledge gap has a direct impact on their ability to properly budget, invest, and save.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
The pandemic underscored both the importance of having an emergency fund as well as how many individuals and families were too close to defaulting on payments. The subsequent increases in inflation further exacerbated New Brunswickers\u2019 financial situations and pointed to the need for better education on money management.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
A re-elected Progressive Conservative government would introduce common sense financial literacy curriculum throughout the education system. By the time a student graduates high school, they will have learned how to open a bank account and build a household budget. The new curriculum will help students understand:<\/div>
\u25cf the difference between debit and credit<\/div>
\u25cf interest and inflation<\/div>
\u25cf different borrowing mechanisms such as mortgages, leases and loans<\/div>
\u25cf savings tools such as Registered Retirement Savings Plans, Tax Free Savings Accounts, Registered Education Savings Plans; and<\/div>
\u25cf the difference between stocks, bonds, Guaranteed Incomes Certificates, and more.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
The decision to include financial literacy in the election platform was cemented after Mr. Higgs held a recent meeting with Junior Achievers in Fredericton, who had designed an entire curriculum that they delivered to the Premier.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
\u201cThis group is inspiring, and their hard work is evident,\u201d said Higgs. \u201cWhile we will leave it to professionals to make the final decision on curriculum, I will certainly share the work done by these young New Brunswickers, and believe it will be helpful for educators to see first hand what is of interest to youth who want to learn a valuable life skill.\u201d<\/div>

\u201cWe count on our education system to set our children up for success in life, giving them the skills they need to succeed in studies and work, and understanding the basics of money is so important,\u201d Higgs said. \u201cRegardless of which career a person chooses, what their pay is, or where they live, knowing how to effectively handle one\u2019s finances is an essential part of life. (Le 26 septembre 2024)<\/strong> – Blaine Higgs, chef du Parti progressiste-conservateur du Nouveau-Brunswick, s’est engag\u00e9 aujourd’hui \u00e0 ce qu’un gouvernement progressiste-conservateur int\u00e8gre la compr\u00e9hension des finances personnelles au programme d’\u00e9tudes de la province afin de s’assurer que tous les \u00e9l\u00e8ves entrent dans l’\u00e2ge adulte avec une meilleure compr\u00e9hension du fonctionnement de l’argent.<\/p>

\u00ab Il est essentiel que nous revenions \u00e0 l’essentiel pour que les enfants et les jeunes puissent quitter l’\u00e9cole avec une solide compr\u00e9hension des principes fondamentaux des finances personnelles \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 M. Higgs. \u00ab Il est inacceptable qu’un nombre croissant de jeunes ne sachent pas comment ouvrir un compte en banque, \u00e9tablir un budget familial, \u00e9pargner pour l’avenir ou comprendre le fonctionnement du cr\u00e9dit, de l’inflation et des int\u00e9r\u00eats compos\u00e9s \u00bb. Partout dans le monde, on se rend de plus en plus compte que les jeunes g\u00e9n\u00e9rations n’ont pas les connaissances financi\u00e8res n\u00e9cessaires pour prendre des d\u00e9cisions \u00e9clair\u00e9es avec leur argent. Ce manque de connaissances a un impact direct sur leur capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9tablir un budget, \u00e0 investir et \u00e0 \u00e9pargner correctement.<\/p>

La pand\u00e9mie a soulign\u00e9 cette r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et l’importance de disposer d’un fonds d’urgence sachant que de nombreuses personnes et familles \u00e9taient \u00e0 deux doigts de se retrouver en situation de d\u00e9faut de paiement. L’augmentation de l’inflation qui a suivi a encore aggrav\u00e9 la situation financi\u00e8re des N\u00e9o-Brunswickois.e.s et a mis en \u00e9vidence la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d’une meilleure \u00e9ducation \u00e0 la gestion de l’argent.<\/p>

Un gouvernement progressiste-conservateur r\u00e9\u00e9lu introduirait un programme de compr\u00e9hension des finances personnelles sens\u00e9 dans tout le syst\u00e8me d’\u00e9ducation. Lorsqu’un \u00e9l\u00e8ve terminera ses \u00e9tudes secondaires, il aura appris \u00e0 ouvrir un compte bancaire et \u00e0 \u00e9tablir un budget familial. Le nouveau programme d’\u00e9tudes aidera les \u00e9l\u00e8ves \u00e0 comprendre :
\u25cf la diff\u00e9rence entre d\u00e9bit et cr\u00e9dit
\u25cf les int\u00e9r\u00eats et l’inflation
\u25cf les diff\u00e9rents m\u00e9canismes d’emprunt tels que les hypoth\u00e8ques, le cr\u00e9dit-bail et les pr\u00eats
\u25cf les outils d’\u00e9pargne tels que les r\u00e9gimes enregistr\u00e9s d’\u00e9pargne-retraite, les comptes d’\u00e9pargne libre d’imp\u00f4t, les r\u00e9gimes enregistr\u00e9s d’\u00e9pargne-\u00e9tudes ; et
\u25cf la diff\u00e9rence entre les actions, les obligations, les certificats de revenu garanti, etc.
La d\u00e9cision d’inclure l’\u00e9ducation financi\u00e8re dans le programme \u00e9lectoral a \u00e9t\u00e9 prise suivant la rencontre entre M. Higgs et l\u2019organisme Junior Achievers \u00e0 Fredericton, qui a con\u00e7u un programme d’\u00e9tudes complet qu’il a remis au premier ministre. \u00ab Ce groupe est une source d’inspiration et son travail acharn\u00e9 est \u00e9vident \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 M. Higgs.<\/p>

\u00ab M\u00eame si nous laissons aux professionnels le soin de prendre la d\u00e9cision finale concernant le programme d’\u00e9tudes, je ne manquerai pas de partager le travail accompli par ces jeunes N\u00e9o-Brunswickois.e.s, et je pense qu’il sera utile aux \u00e9ducateurs de voir de leurs propres yeux ce qui int\u00e9resse les jeunes qui veulent acqu\u00e9rir des comp\u00e9tences utiles dans la vie courante \u00bb. \u00ab Nous comptons sur notre syst\u00e8me \u00e9ducatif pour pr\u00e9parer nos enfants \u00e0 r\u00e9ussir dans la vie, en leur donnant les comp\u00e9tences dont ils ont besoin pour r\u00e9ussir leurs \u00e9tudes et leur travail, et il est tr\u00e8s important de comprendre les bases de l’argent \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 M.
