PC Opposition leader calls for resignation of Premier Brian Gallant

Higgs says Premier played key role in property tax scandal and must resign

Fredericton-Blaine Higgs, leader of the Progressive Conservative Opposition says Brian Gallant must resign as Premier of New Brunswick for covering-up his involvement in the property tax assessment scandal.

“What we know today is that the Premier played THE role in making this happen. It was his decision to fast-track it; he needed to take ownership for it. If he had done that a month ago we might have said okay, you messed up and this shouldn’t be the way this is done. But he tried to hide it, deflect it, and blame others….not take leadership or accountability. So what happens when somebody does that? They need to pay the price and the price for me is that he needs to resign.”

Higgs says Gallant has caused an enormous amount of stress and worry throughout the civil service, particularly in Service New Brunswick, which was changed from a government department to a crown corporation by the Gallant government.

“The Premier has threatened the livelihoods of these people but now we know that he gave the order which set off this entire chain of events.”
